  Lead Acid Storage Battery Life

The life of a lead acid storage battery is affected by multiple factors and can be divided into two main aspects: shelf life and cycle life.

The shelf life refers to the time an inactive battery can be stored before it becomes unusable, usually considered as having only 80% of its initial capacity. For sealed lead acid batteries, it can generally sit on a shelf at room temperature with no charging for up to a year when at full capacity, but it is recommended to charge them at least every 6 – 9 months as they typically discharge 3% every month.

The cycle life is defined as the number of complete charge-discharge cycles a battery can perform before its nominal capacity falls below 80% of its initial rated capacity. In general, lifetimes of 500 to 1200 cycles are typical for lead acid batteries. However, this can vary depending on factors such as the depth of discharge, temperature, and maintenance practices. For example, the HAZE HZY12-200 has a design float charge life of 15 years at 25℃±5℃ and can achieve 2950 cycles at 25% depth of discharge.

Proper maintenance is crucial for maximizing the life of lead acid storage batteries. This includes keeping the batteries clean and dry, ensuring the vent caps are secure, checking and tightening electrical connections, and using suitable products to clean the batteries and terminals. Additionally, it is important to recharge batteries before and during storage, never store discharged batteries, and rotate a fleet of batteries to ensure even usage.
