Basic Concepts of Energy Storage Power Sources
An energy storage power source is a device or system that can store electrical energy and release it when needed. At its core, it consists of an energy storage medium and associated power electronics components. The most common energy storage medium is the battery. Batteries, such as lithium ion batteries, lead acid batteries, and flow batteries, store electrical energy in chemical form. When charging, an electrochemical reaction occurs in the battery, converting electrical energy into chemical energy and storing it. During discharging, the reverse reaction takes place, converting the stored chemical energy back into electrical energy.
In addition to batteries, other energy storage technologies include supercapacitors and flywheels. Supercapacitors store energy electrostatically and can charge and discharge very quickly, making them suitable for applications that require rapid power bursts, such as in some hybrid electric vehicles for regenerative braking energy recovery. Flywheels, on the other hand, store energy in the form of kinetic energy. A high speed rotating mass (the flywheel) stores energy, and when power is needed, the rotational energy is converted back into electrical energy through a generator.
The power electronics components in an energy storage power source are responsible for controlling the charging and discharging processes. They ensure that the energy storage medium is charged and discharged safely and efficiently, and also interface with the power grid or other electrical loads.
