The working principle of an autotransformer

  Autotransformer, as the name suggests, is a type of transformer that can self couple. Its internal structure is relatively simple, mainly composed of an iron core and a winding. This winding is divided into two parts: one is a common winding, and the other is an independent winding. When AC current passes through the common winding, an alternating magnetic field is generated in the iron core, which further induces the electromotive force in the independent winding, thereby achieving voltage transformation.

  Compared with traditional dual winding transformers, the uniqueness of autotransformers lies in the fact that their common winding and independent winding are connected in series. This design makes the required number of winding turns and wire cross-sectional area for autotransformers to transmit the same power relatively small, thereby reducing manufacturing costs and losses.
