Will lithium batteries accelerate capacity degradation when used at extreme temperatures?

The use of lithium batteries at extreme temperatures can indeed accelerate capacity degradation. Under high temperature conditions, the chemical reaction rate inside the battery increases, leading to electrolyte decomposition, accelerated SEI film growth, and decreased thermal stability of the separator and electrode materials, all of which can cause a rapid decrease in battery capacity.

For example, the electrolyte may undergo oxidation and decomposition reactions with the positive electrode material at high temperatures, producing gases and insoluble substances, blocking electrode micropores, increasing battery internal resistance, and leading to a decrease in cycling capacity. Meanwhile, high temperatures may also exacerbate the deposition and lithium deposition of metallic lithium, affecting the safety and lifespan of batteries.

Under low temperature conditions, the viscosity of the electrolyte increases, the migration speed of ions slows down, resulting in a decrease in the charging and discharging efficiency of the battery and a reduction in the available capacity of the battery. Low temperature may also cause the diffusion rate of lithium ions inside the battery to not keep up with the transfer rate of electrons, leading to battery polarization and further exacerbating capacity loss.

In addition, extreme temperatures may accelerate aging processes such as corrosion of the current collector and loss of electrode active materials, affecting the overall performance and cycle life of the battery. Therefore, in order to extend the service life of lithium batteries and maintain their performance, it is advisable to avoid using the battery under extreme temperature conditions as much as possible and take appropriate thermal management measures to control the temperature of the battery.
